“Not Looking For A Visa, Mr. Pitbull” (Sara’s Blog)

A couple of weeks ago I was sitting in my car and a Pitbull song, “International Love”, came on the radio. I bopped my head for a few minutes and remembered thinking, “Ah, this is nice and refreshing. Not such a degrading song to women and he’s actually giving shout outs to different places and countries.” That is until I heard the words “Down in DR, they’re looking for Visas”. Being of Dominican descent, this didn’t go over too well with me. Actually, not well at all. To the point where I screamed out some explicit words and actually thought about whether I should listen to his music ever again. I am not sure if I am the only one who saw this as an insult and was offended? Is that the ONLY thing he could come up with? I probably would’ve even accepted him stating that most Dominican’s have big rears, as degrading as that would’ve been. However, it may have been a fraction better than portraying us as gold diggers, in a way.

The next day a friend said to me the following: “That’s a compliment! All that means is that Dominican women know what they want and will not beat around the bush like the other females!” I must say, my friend telling me that made me feel a bit better. It did not make me forgive Pitbull completely but it did bring things into a different perspective.
At times, I think we as women are taught to smile and just go with the flow. We’re not expected to speak our minds or say exactly what we want. I come from a very HEAD STRONG DOMINICAN FAMILY. Every day I’m proud that not only my mother, but MY GRANDMOTHER, too, threw those crazy old standards out the door and taught us to ALWAYS speak our minds; To never settle for anything less than exactly what we want; And to not stop until we get it! This not ONLY makes me PROUD to be a WOMAN but PROUD to be DOMINICAN.

So Mr. Pitbull, Mr. 305. THANK YOU. Thank you for your amazing compliment to the ladies of my beautiful island who put their cards on the table with the first HELLO. So you didn’t compliment our kindness or our amazing features, but you complimented something more important: Our strong personalities! So, with that I say, dinos lo que quiera pero, no pendeja!

Signed, a Dominican-American New Yorker, with a blue passport.

Down in DR, they’re looking for Visa’s
I ain’t talking credit cards if you know what I mean!
En Cuba la cosa esta dura
But the woman get down, if you know what I mean
In Colombia, the women got everything on,
with some of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen
In Brazil, they’re freaky with big oh boobs and they bounce, blue, yellow and green!
    In L.A. tengo la Mexicana,
In New York, tengo la Boricua
Besitos para todas las mujeres en Venezuela, muah!
    Y en Miami, tengo cualquiera!

ive listened to this song many times and didn’t actually find it offensive bc its mostly true. Most women r looking for visas in DR….. BUT what he didnt say was if it was a bad thing or good thing….
He’s gonna sing about things that “sell” and apply to the majority of his audience. I have yet to meet a girl that came from DR recently who wasn’t with a guy for a visa, used someone else’s papers to come, or tried everything to get her visa.
I don’t think he meant to offend anyone, and out of all the songs out on the charts, this might be the least offensive to me. Id rather a guy say that dominican women look for guys to get their visa, than say that we’re strippers, hoes, bitches, boushie chicks, hood rats, etc.
If i cud sing about bullshit and be a top selling artists, then more power to u.

When I heard the song I also felt hurt as a Dominican woman!! And I really like your perspective on his comment!! And also in the song he call Cuban women Cueros!! Witch is really not tasteful of him since his mother is Cuban!! Pit bull just says the first things that’s pops in his mouth!! I am vey disappointed as a Dominican and also a women

come on, Pitbull manages to get a reference of having a threesome in just about every one of his songs, he’s not exactly the source to go to if you’re looking for a stong viewpoint of women.

If you thought that was offensive you should listen to this song. Mami el Negro quiere to asucar y tu no lo quieres dar. A que me importa.

I believe he did said it in a bad way. Firstly, women, and even including men, from Dominican Republic are not the only country whose people are looking for Visa or away to get to the US. This is something you can say for all poor or Spanish speaking country, they would do anything to get a Visa. Secondly, saying that someone is looking for Visa is some negative no matter in what way you say it. Everything that you can conclude from a person who’s looking for a Visa is bad. And thirdly, the singer described nice body of women from other countries like saying that Colombia has most beautiful women he ever seen. He shouldn’t have said nothing about Dominicans instead. I still can’t see why people don’t care about this,or they just skim through the song. Although it doesn’t matters because he has million of people who listen to his remix, I will never listen to another of this guy son

At least we can get a visa and we don’t have to be sailing with the sharks to get out of Cuba. That was very insulting. I am Dominican, with my dominican passport and work and can afford a visa on my own.

    Lol, why you mad though?
I’m dominican and I found this funny because it’s true.
Many, manyyyy women from D.R will get with a guy just to get out of the country.
Swallow some pride and open your eyes.
